Akwaaba!!! You are welcome to the Unofficial Volta River Authority Home Pages

The Volta River Authority (VRA) is a wholly owned Ghanaian statutory public institution created by an Act of Parliament in 1961 to take over from the then Volta River Project Preparatory Commission primarily to develop the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam and also see to a multi-faceted development of the Volta River Basin.

Akosombo GS engraved

It's primary business is to generate, transmit and (in the northern half of Ghana) distribute electricity. In addition, VRA has other responsibilities and accordingly engages in a number of activities, in furtherance of our corporate mandate. These include Lake Transportation, Tourism and the maritime administration of the Volta Lake, Lakeside Health, Management of Akosombo Township, the Kpong Farms among others.

VRA is well known within the West African sub-region as a leader in the electric utility business. VRA's network interconnections with Togo, Benin and the Cote d'Ivoire have served to open up further economic cooperation with these countries. Currently, plans are in progress to develop direct transmission interconnect links to, and with, Nigeria and Burkina Faso.

As a staff of the VRA, I am pleased to present this exposition of the Volta River Authority to just acknowledge the role it plays in the lives of Ghanaians and the people in the sub-region. VRA's commitment and dedication to excellence, quality and reliability of supply to our customers is legendary and our constant search for new ideas to further improve our operations has become accepted almost like a tradition.

I trust that during this cyber visit, you will learn more about the Volta River Authority and obtain whatever basic information you may desire.

Annual Reports & Accounts

Although the VRA's Annual Reports and Accounts are normally not circulated to the General Public, copies are available for reference in the VRA Library at the Head Office in Accra and in most offices of the Authority across Ghana.

The Annual Remarks made by the Chairman of the VRA Board is perhaps the best snapshot of each year's highlights of the VRA's life as a corporate entity and a Public Utility and as a "benchmark" national public institution I have therefore presented these remarks via these pages:
