Hydrology of the Volta Lake

Following the substantial completion of works on the Dam and the generating facilities at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Generating Station in 1965, the Volta River was impounded for the first time and the Volta Lake started forming into what would become the largest man-made water body in the world.

Since then, the Authority has maintained a very close watch over the levels of the lake primarily to ensure two things:

  • That water levels do not exceed 276 ft (the maximum) which could cause extensive flooding consequent to going above the design maximum waterline of the shores of the Volta Lake.
  • That water levels do not fall below 240ft (the safe operating minimum level) to prevent the Volta Dam from failing - become incapable of providing water to turn the turbines.

The Authority's Engineering Design & Construction Department maintains an elaborate and extensive network of water gaging stations on the Volta River/Lake and all of its tributaries to facilitate Reservoir Management. Electricity Generation Operating Decisions are closely rationalised around a System Planning and Reservoir Simulation and Management model as well as the physical condition of the generating facilities. The Authority works very closely with the Meteorological Services Department to monitor global and national climatic conditions with special emphasis on Rainfall

The Volta River Basin is thus very critical to the operations of the Authority and Ghana. In recent times, Ghanaians have become interested in "The Lake Level" primarily as a natural consequence to the prolonged drought conditions which culminated in conditions of power curtailment during most of 1998. In addition, the Lake provides the key to Volta Lake Transportation System

The lake levels that the general public have become so closely associated with are recorded at approximately 8:CAM every morning at the Akosombo Generating Station. Given that the record extends for over 30 years, You will find below, the closing levels taken on the last day of every month since 1965.

It must be pointed out that the recorded hydrology of the Volta River and its tributaries extends much further back to 1936. These are the inflow data (measured in cubic feet per second). In specialised statistical hydrology studies, the pre-impoundment records have been proved to be statistically homogenous with the post-impoundment data and are thus employed in all operational work concerning the management of the Lake.
